The sitting arrangement was made in such a manner that Elaine was to sit next to Oliver.  Pringle wanted her daughter to win the heart of Oliver by any means as he was a millionaire and belonged to an aristocratic lineage. When the secretary of Oliver informed Pringle over telephone that   would not be able to attend the dinner since he was to leave for Boston immediately on business purpose, Pringle got utterly disappointed and started throwing tantrums on Oliver for having spoiled all her dinner plans and most importantly her plan to get her daughter married to him.
