Chapter-10
1) Where did Oliver go every morning?
Ans: Every morning Oliver went to a white-haired old gentleman who lived near the church. He went there because he was taught to read better and to write and he worked hard to please such a kind master.
2) What did Oliver and Rose do every evening?
Ans: Every evening Rose and Oliver prepared his lessons for the next day in a small room overlooking the garden, and then Rose would sing at the piano or read while darkness fell.
3) How was Oliver’s happiness marred one day? Describe the incident.
Ans: Oliver’s happiness was marred one day, when, on an errand to the nearest small town, he had bumped into a tall man wrapped in a cloak.
The incident occurred, when this old gentleman, who had a dark red mark on his cheek, had glared at Oliver with his large dark eyes and crushed him with furious anger out of all proportion to Oliver’s small mistake. He had finally fallen to the ground in a sort of fit and Oliver had to summon help from the nearest inn. He thought he would never forget the hatred in those eyes.
4) Narrate the incident at the window.
Ans: One evening, Oliver was working at his books. Since it had been a warm day, Oliver was tired and fell into a day dream. He dreamt as if he was back in Fagin’s house. Suddenly, he heard a whisper as if it was Fagin’s, “Hush, my dear!.... It’s he, sure enough. Come enough.” Oliver was frightened and on waking up he saw Fagin and the same man whom he had bumped upon some days earlier. Oliver leaped from the window, but the two men were gone. He then shouted from help. Harry and Dr. Losberne came running but could not find anyone. Upon asking for the direction in which the criminals had fled, Oliver pointed out to Harry. They gave a frantic search in every nook and corner of the road and also the local ale-house, but could not get any information.
