Ans: Oliver Twist was born in the year 1837 in a local poorhouse in England.

Ans: The doctor was paid only a small sum by the town to look after the poor, and the old poorhouse woman who acted as nurse did little to help him.

Ans: When the doctor asked Oliver’s mother not to talk she asked the doctor to let her see her child before she die. But it was no good. The mother shook her head, stretched out her arms for her child and the doctor gave it to her. She kissed her child desperately, then put her hands to her face and fell back dead.

Ans: Oliver was taking care by an elderly woman, Mrs. Mann, who took in numbers of such destitute orphans on payment by the town authorities of seven pence and half penny for each child for each week.

Ans: The boys called the meeting because of the slow starvation,  and they had decided one should walk up to the master after supper to ask for more.

Ans: The punishment that was given to Oliver was that he was locked in the room up, to spend the night alone.

Ans: The notice that was put outside the gate was offering five pounds to anyone who would take oliver off the hands of the poorhouse.

Ans: Mr. Sowerberry was a tall thin man, dressed always in black, as suited his trade.

Ans: Mr. Sowerberry came to take Oliver. The profession of Mr. Sowerberry was that he was the local undertaker of the town.

Ans: The other members at Mr. Sowerberry’s house were Charlotte, the maid, Noah Claypole, the other apprentice and Mrs. Sowerberry, his wife.

22) How was Oliver treated in the house of Mr. Sowerberry?

Ans: Oliver was treated very badly. He was cursed, beaten, fed on scraps which the dog refused and made to sleep under the workshop bench among the coffins.

23) What happened between Noah Claypole and Oliver Twist?

Ans: At dinner- time, Noah Claypole went too far with his cruelty. Noah was talking rubbish about Oliver’s mother and which made Oliver angry. Noah pleased that Oliver was angry, continued to tease him. Suddenly Oliver could not bear it no longer. Oliver was red with fury, he upset the table and attacked Noah, who shouted for help.

24) What happened after the incident?

Ans: After the incident Charlotte and Mrs. Sowerberry came running and between Noah and Oliver, they beat and scratched and overpowered poor Oliver and threw him into the cellar and locked the door.

25) What had Oliver determined to do?

Ans: Oliver had determined to run away from the house of Mr. Sowerberry.
