A DRIVE IN A MOTOR CAR
A DRIVE IN A MOTOR CAR
1. The author said so because the driver had received two full half hour lessons in driving and she was confident of driving the car directly on the road as there was nobody to take a driving test.
When the author‟s family members asked in unison how fast the vehicle would go and that whether it could run fifty miles an hour, the driver said those given lines.
2. The author gave us details of the second windscreen because this was a special feature which one would not find in cars today.
3. The driver was referred to as „the ancient sister‟ because of the type of dress she had worn before driving. She had put on her driving gloves and tied a scarf over her head which showed the driving fashion of an older period.
4. The rubber bulb of the horn was pressed quite often in order to avoid collision with the human beings. It was pressed every time they passed a human being, whether it was a butcher on his bicycle or any pedestrian strolling on the pavement.
5. As the driver started driving, she was questioned by the author‟s family members if she knew how to drive well and also if she knew where the brakes were located. Moreover, she had to drive safely and press the bulb horn quite often so as to avoid collision with the pedestrians and other human beings. However, she successfully overcame all the on road difficulties and entered a countryside. She said the above words after the success.
a. Mother was very nervous and told her to keep her eyes on the road and concentrate on her driving.
b. The other passengers were excited and told her to speed up the car as they were at the existing speed of only fifteen miles an hour.
c. The driver was influenced by their shouts and taunts and increased the speed.
7. When the author‟s nose was severely injured and was hanging on only by a single thread of skin, his mother grabbed a handkerchief from her purse and placed his nose softly back on its place with it and held it there. She acted very judiciously and told him to lean back and keep his head still. 8. 8. This was necessary because the author needed immediate medical attention, i.e the care and treatment of a doctor as his condition was not very good.
Treatments during the earlier days were not very advanced due to the lack of technology. However, today due to the modern technological innovations in the medical field, treatments have become quite simpler than earlier.

RTC:
1. A. The event that is taking place is that the author‟s family had purchased a new car and is out for a drive for the first time. The event is taking place in the village of Llandaff.
B. The “fortunately” is used because the author and other family members in the car were little afraid because it was the first time the driver was driving on a busy road immediately after she had finished her driving lessons, and feared of some accidents that may occur. However, there were very few vehicles on the road. So, they felt safe and hence used the word “fortunately”.
C. The other vehicles that might have been there on the road at that time are trucks, delivery vans and even a private car.
2. a) There are small grown trees in the hedge because it is a green field with high hedges.
b) It is necessary to hurry because the author‟s nose was in a very bad condition as it was hanging on only by a single small thread of skin. He was profusely bleeding and his mother had held back the nose into its place. Moreover, he needed immediate medical aid.
c) All these were more complicated than it seemed because though the accident was not very serious but the impact it had was extreme. The author‟s nose was in a very bad condition and was hanging on only by a single thread of skin. It was also complicated because the driver had not learnt to drive it backwards.
