The postmaster had resigned from his job as a postmaster after his application for transfer was rejected by the Head Office in Kolkata. Ratan had been with the postmaster throughout his time in Ulapur, assisting him with domestic tasks. As an orphan from the village, she saw him as someone who could show her kindness and compassion. She developed feelings for him, even asking him to take her to Calcutta. But the postmaster thought that the idea was impossible. The postmaster only had a general fondness for her and assured her that he would tell the new postmaster to take care of her, and that Ratan should not worry because he was leaving.

Thus, he postmaster had made this comment  with a sense of kindness and general sentiment, but it could not fathom the feelings of a twelve year old girl.

3.  "The question was asked in a flash".

Ans: This line is an extract from the story "The Lady or the Tiger" written by Frank R. Stockton.The Coutier who had fallen in love with the Princess and was now brought in the arena as an accused for trial.

This extract refers the two doors in the arena, one representing life and the other death. A courageous young man, tall and handsome, glanced at the princess seated in front of him. His gaze seemed to inquire which door was the correct choice. The courtier continuously looked at the Princess waiting restlessly for her signal. The princess knew the answer and silently indicated the right door. However, the ultimate decision is left to the reader to determine which door leads to life and which to death.
